I was a long-time subscriber to Gene's Jazzletter, and loved his writing and his perspective. I enjoyed the book-length collections of the Jazzletter essays, and his bios of Herman, Mercer, and Oscar Peterson. This is the second important thing I've read by Bobby Scott, the first being his experience as a very young man on a JATP tour with Lester Young. The humanity and sensitivity with which he approached both friends is of a piece.

Just out of college, I first discovered Bobby as an artist back in the '60s when I found his marvelous Emarcy (or Mercury) LP, "Joyful Noises," in a record store. It was some of the most exciting and very original writing for a big band I'd heard. Later, I discovered his recordings as a singer, and then as a pianist. I connected with his singing and found his piano just as interesting as that first orchestral LP. It was 25-30 years later when I read his impressions of Pres in Lewis Porter's "Lester Young Reader." I revisited it a year or two ago after reading the wonderful Douglas Henry Daniels long form bio of Young.
