Holman recorded his original "No Heat" on his Big Band In A Jazz Orbit" LP, which is a "must have" for any big band fan. I found it in a Sears bin on summer vacation from college c.a. 1960. The Dream Band recordings are yet another gift from the late Wally Heider, who came on the scene by documenting the live performances of nearly two dozen of the bands touring during the '50s. I've found more than 100 CDs of his work during this period, beginning with the'53 Kenton band, and extending to sets by Dizzy's big band, a four-trombone set with Kai Winding, classic sets with Basie's, Woody's, and Maynard's bands, and Sinatra with a big band and strings by the end of the '50s. Most of those CDs are on "private" labels, found on ebay.

Featured several pieces from this on the A-Trane yesterday as part of my living centenary tribute to the great Mr. Gibbs! Although repeating many of the pieces from the earlier volumes (still missing a couple - they were never easy to track down!), the soloes are fresh and the sound is exceptional for a live recording of that vintage. That's my recommendation! ... N

(Maybe Whaling City Sound can reissue the earlier volumes - I'll drop Gerry a note!)
