Thanks for this breakdown of the Afro Latin rhythms as a musician and listener I've always loved this form of lively music. As you point out to do it properly the players have to hold back on being flashy with the end results being so much more satisfying for the audience. Would you know are there certain keys that are more favorable for this style of music?
Hi Tom: Thanks for reaching out with this nice message. As a drummer with a very limited knowledge of theory and harmony, perhaps I'm not the best source for keys to play Latin Jazz in but you might want to listen to the recordings of Cal Tjader, Eddie Palmieri and Clare Fischer to get some idea of the keys they prefer to work in. Hope this helps. Kind regards, Steve
These are very good ideas for future Substack features, Erik. I am familiar with some of these beats, but not all of them. Time for me to do some research. Kind regards, Steve.
This article is terrific, thanks for posting!
Thanks so much for the appreciative note, Karl.
You're welcome I do have a good number of Eddie's CD will look up the others.

Could you go further and tell how New York Salsa Claves and Colombian Claves work relative to Cuban Claves.
And what about Rumba Congolaise and Rumba Senegalaise?
